Chapter 3: Let the fabric do the talking (6 min)
Deborah talks about using different fabrics to be your guide for your machine quilting. Deborah then demonstrates simple straight stitching and how you can use the fabric’s pattern to guide you.
Chapter 4: Twin needle quilting (6 min)
Deborah talks you through the tools you need and how to setup your machine for twin needle quilting. She then shows you how to create a simple, but effective result by quilting with a twin needle.
Chapter 5: Free-motion quilting troubleshooting (9 min)
Deborah demonstrates some common problems and mistakes that can be made with free-motion machine quilting and how to resolve these problems and improve your skills. She also shares her advice on how your machine’s tension can change the final results.
Chapter 6: Using fabric designs as quilting motifs (8 min)
Deborah shows you how you can use fabric designs to create templates that can be stuck to your fabric and then used as a guide to trace around with your needle. The advantage to this technique is that you won’t leave any marks on your fabric from tracing designs.
Chapter 7: How to quilt various free-motion designs (14 min)
Follow along as Deborah shows you some of her favourite free-motion quilting designs and variations on similar designs. She also shares her advice on how to think ahead when you quilt, so your quilting is seamless.

What crafts do you do? Quilt making really only, takes up all of my time . A little dress making in the holidays with my daughter.
How long have you been crafting? All my life really. Started as a very young girl making all of my clothes, then in1992 started making quilts and haven’t looked back.
Who taught you your skills? Self-Taught mostly and mentored by some wonderful Quilt NSW professional quilters .Over the years I have attended a class with Nancy Crow, Brenda Gail smith, Lorraine Downy, Michelle Mischkulnig and the late Coral Garnsey taught be my first sample quilt in 1992. Still to today Michelle Marvig advises me with my piecing.
Is crafting your hobby or your profession? I am a professional Quilter, teaching domestic machine quilting and applique both face to face and on line classes. Quilt designer, pattern maker, Bernina Ambassador.
Do you teach/publish your skills and projects? I have been teaching since 2000 and have had the honour to teach thousands of Australians and New Zealanders how to domestic machine quilt the Deborah Louie way with wonderful success. I am currently working on a series of patterns of my machine applique and quilted quilts to be available on my web site. Also, on line instructional life time classes in domestic quilting and applique.
What do you love most about crafting? Being able to be creative making beautiful quilts and to inspire others to love their own work. To make students happy, to take them further with their machine skills than they have ever been before. That’s very rewarding. Wonderful people to meet and making beautiful friends.
What is your proudest crafting moment/achievement? I am very proud of the fact that I am making a difference in people’s quilting lives. Connecting my love of quilting with others to inspire them, and still teaching and moving forward creating new classes. Developing new designs, growing, learning myself all the time after 17 years of full time quilting teaching and still loving it. I am very proud that I am moving forward with the times of internet learning,
