Drawing inspiration from the traditional Japanese art of Boro, Jane McDonald created a simple but stunning purse pattern, which can be made with a variety of fabrics and colours to suit any taste.

Use your favourite colours and fabrics to create your own unique purse

The purse uses traditional Japanese Boro and Sashiko embroidery techniques

What crafts do you do?Sashiko, kogin, boro inspired designs, quilting, patchwork, embroidery, crochet, bag-making, purse-making, one-stitch sashiko.

Who taught you your skills?I am mainly self-taught but have had some influential teachers along the way including Irma Chelsworth for sashiko and I went to TAFE for learning to patchwork in the early days. I have also been fortunate enough to have done classes with Yoko Saito, Akiko Ike and Mrs Miura san all specialists in traditional Japanese textile crafts.

Is crafting your hobby or your profession?Both! I am very fortunate to have managed to make my hobby my profession. My business began from my interest in Japanese traditional textiles and crafts and has grown, both as a passion and a business. I think this makes for a very fruitful experience both professionally and personally as I continue to develop new interests within these specialised crafts.

Do you teach/publish your skills and projects?If so where and please tell us more. I teach all over Australia at craft fairs, here in the studio and at retreats most recently in Lennox Head for the Northern Rivers Japanese Textile Retreat. I publish projects in a few craft magazines including Homespun, my latest project was Boro Inspired Vest which was made in response to popular demand for this appropriated form of Japanese traditional craft.

What do you love most about crafting? I love the experience of creating different projects with people who share my interest of Japanese crafts especially textiles.
