How did you start your sewing career? I started sewing at school - just small items through a textiles and design class. But my real passion for sewing started when I made a quilt for my son to celebrate his move into his ‘big boy’ bed. It was a simple Irish chain quilt bought as a kit from my local sewing centre. My passion for quilting grew from then, and now I have the privilege of working with some amazing fabric designers, creating and sewing quilts that I get to share with the world.

What would you do without this creative outlet?I haven’t really thought about that. I’ve always been creative in some way, thanks to a very crafty mum, so have always enjoyed making things and experimenting with different crafts and materials.

What are the stitching tools you couldn’t live without? Couldn’t live without my rotary cutter, rulers and mat. I love quilts with lots of piecing, and a sharp blade in your cutter, a sturdy ruler and a good mat are musts if you want your quilt to come together quickly and accurately.

What do you love most about your work area – and what drives you crazy about it? I love my fabric-display cabinets. Opening the doors and pulling out fabrics to create my next quilt is always exciting. What drives me crazy is my messy workspace, with too many projects on the go. They do say, though, that creativity is a messy business, and my sewing room can vouch for that!!

How many different crafts do you do? Working full time now has meant I only have time for quilting, but prior to that, I loved to experiment with a range of crafts, including knitting, hand embroidery and dressmaking.

What’s your favourite – and why? Quilting is my favourite craft, as it allows me to experiment with colour and design and work with some amazing designers and fabrics. I also love the fact that quilts make great long-lasting gifts. Every quilt is unique and imperfect, and I love this about all handmade items.

Have you got lots of projects waiting to be done?Always – like every quilter I have a project I’m working on, at least one in the background that should have been finished and isn’t, a few more designed and ready to go and a large number of ideas floating around my head on a daily basis.

If you were granted one sewing wish, what would you want it to be? To have more time to go to retreats and meet-ups with my fellow quilters. I love spending time with fellow quilters; everyone always has amazing hints and tips to share, but, unfortunately, at the moment, I just don’t have the time to catch up as often as I’d like.

Is this your full-time occupation? No, unfortunately, at this stage, quilting for me is an outside work hour’s process. However, one day, I’d love to make a full-time career out of it.

What are you most proud of? What makes me most proud is seeing other quilters create quilts using my designs. All the long hours spent designing and creating are worthwhile when you see other people turn your design and vision into their own.
