Sarah Zimmerman

Where do you live and work? I grew up in Seattle [USA], but recently we moved to Southern California. And it is hot virtually all year round. So my workspace is indoors in the air-conditioned house. My main workspace is upstairs next to my side of the bed, where I have my crochet cart and a plethora of yarn for my late-night crochet habit. But during the day, you can usually find me in my crochet chair in my living room. I won't lie, there is basically yarn all over my house, and I crochet where I want, when I want.

Why crocheting? Crocheting has been my hobby and passion for the past five years. I love being able to design my own patterns and share them with my fellow crocheters.

Have you tried plenty of others? Of course! I love all kinds of crafts. When I'm not working with yarn, you can find me with buttons, felt, acrylic paint, craft paper and never far from my hot glue gun! I also like to experiment with slow-cooker recipes.

Who taught you your crafting skills? I surprised myself when I caught on so quickly to the art of crochet. After my second son was born, I wanted to make him a few crochet accessories. I taught myself by watching YouTube videos and looking at pattern books. In just a few short months, I was not only able to follow patterns but I began designing my own.

What does this craft mean to you? One of the best things that has come from crocheting is the massive online community I’ve found that loves crochet as much as I do. I’m so blessed to be able to network and find support from crocheters around the world.

Is it hard to find time to do it or is it a profession? My crochet and craft blog is now a full-time profession. But it doesn't feel like a job, because I absolutely love what I do. I have three young kids at home, so finding time is always a challenge. I have become great at multi-tasking, and I spend a lot of late nights working and re-working my designs.

Do you teach your skills to others? I try to make my crochet blog tutorials as detailed as possible. I enjoy being able to teach others crochet tips, tricks and techniques through photos and short videos.

How would you describe your style? What makes it unique? I’d describe my style as cute, fun, trendy, and modern. I specialise in kids’ and baby items, such as character hats and blankets.

What is your advice for beginners? Have fun and keep experimenting with your crochet. It's not a competition. Mistakes happen, and everyone's technique is a little different. Enjoy and be proud of your work. There is nothing better than something handmade. I still love some of my first projects, even if they are a bit lopsided!
