I am the indie designer behind the Funky Friends Factory range of toy patterns. I live north side of Brisbane, on a ‘bush block’ with my husband, 2 dogs a kitty and some chooks.
I began sewing and knitting my own toys and dolls when I was 7, but it took until my 30s (OK, mid-30s) to realize that ‘you’re never too old to do what you love!’. That's when I decided to try and make a living doing what I love. I trained as an optometrist but my passion is sewing.
I began making ‘baby-safe bunnies’ for all my friends’ babies with sewn on faces and no chewable, choke-able bits. They were so popular that I moved on to mass-production (that's where the 'Factory' bit in “Funky Friends Factory” comes from! I sold the toys at markets and by word-of-mouth. In 2001 I did a desktop publishing course so that I could learn how to ‘computerise’ the patterns and started producing the Funky Friends Factory toy patterns to sell. I have had my Funky Friends Factory website since 2006, which has allowed me to sell my patterns to crafters all over the world.
As the daughter of a mathematical father and an artistic mother, I have always felt I was only ‘half-good’ at anything, kind of a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. With my Funky Friends Factory soft toys, I have finally found something that is 100% me! I love creating cuddly three-dimensional critters from fabric and it has given me such pleasure to see other people getting enjoyment from my creations.
I hope you’ll enjoy my little critters as much as I do. Happy sewing!
